2010 anti-banger selection

Keepreal International 2010

As great as they are in the club, we all need a break from bangers and the stuff that pays the bills for guys like Aoki, Afrojack, and Guetta. Here is a great selection of tracks on the more experimintal side of things, put together by KEEP ≠ REAL They picked out some great tracks; some minimal, some danceable indie, some un-danceable, some straight up wacky, and some you might recognize. Its definitely worth sorting through.

The Unicorns
posted by: machete

This past Monday at the Bronson Bar on Hollywood, I had the pleasure of meeting Nick “Neil” Diamonds (aka Nick Thornburg) formerly of the Unicorns, who was spinning a DJ set.

the unicorns - who will cut our hair when we're dead?

He has also fronted the band, Islands, and is a pretty awesome song writer: his albums tend to stick strictly to a topic. With the Unicorns album above, most of the songs were dancy tunes about ghosts. With Islands, he wrote mostly about whales. Gotta love it. Well anyway, here’s some essential the Unicorns listening:

I Was Born a Unicorn

Definitely badass meeting one of my indie idols.

MGMT – Congratulations (Erol Alkan Rework)
posted by: chopsticks

erol alkan

Erol Alkan is a legend amongst DJs. The man is a rare example of a club DJ who made it solely on the strength of his skills as a DJ rather than as a producer, but now that he’s starting to produce, it turns out he’s a talented producer anyway and probably would’ve made it even if he wasn’t as great as he is.

He’s collaborated with top acts like Justice and has produced bangers like Lemonade with a certain unibrowed German (Boys Noize ya’ll).

Now he’s gotten his hands on the title track of MGMT‘s newest album, Congratulations. The result is a down tempo dancefloor twerker full of good vibes and poppy synths. I think you’ll enjoy.

MGMT – Congratulations (Erol Alkan Rework) PREVIEW by Erol Alkan

The track is out on November 23rd on a special limited edition 7.”

Adventures in Indie: Unrest
posted by: guest contributor

Hey there, EF readers! It’s me, Party Dad, checking in once again to share another one of my favorite bands with whoever wants to listen. This week I kinda felt like taking things out of straight-up dance music mode and delving into my other True Music Love: indie-pop!

There are a lot of ups and downs to being an obsessive music fan. You’ll spend months meticulously researching a particular band or genre, tracking down and paying exorbitant amounts for rare 7-inches and LPs, reading even the most minuscule paragraph-long blog post found ten pages into a Google search on your subject, only to have your interest evaporate almost completely once you find a new obsession to pursue. Then, there are those bands that, for whatever reason, seem to stick with you no matter what. These are the true favorites, and for me no band typifies this type of band/fan relationship quite like cult indie legends Unrest!

“So Sick”
members (l-r): Phil Krauth, Mark Robinson, Bridget Cross

If you like what you hear (and how could you not?), I have plenty more to say about this amazing band, plus more clips to check out, after the jump!
