Back when I was heavy into skateboarding in middle school and high school, I used to watch skate videos every day before I went out to the few decent spots we had in Marion, South Carolina. We didn’t have Youtube way back then, so I had Toy Machine’s Welcome to Hell on VHS and watched it until it was demagnetized in my favorite spots. One time our shitty VCR ate the damn thing, and I got my mom to tape it back together in the broken spot–that woman is a saint, and can fix just about anything inside of a house. I got the 411 videos as soon as they came out (or I’d hook two VCRs together with my friend, Louis, and we’d copy them to trade with each other) on CSS, which I’m happy to see is still around. Anyway, those nerdy vids that only someone really into skateboarding could stomach watching more than once in a single sitting are what Bird Flu would call “skater porn.” The below is what Bird Flu would call “DJ porn.” I’ll let you connect the proper analogy lines on your own.
Now that DJing (and to a lesser extent producing) has become the same sort of obsession for me, I keep a small (and free thanks to Youtube and Vimeo) arsenal of videos around that get me hyper before a gig, teach me something new, or just remind me what big parties look like when I’m sitting on the couch with not shit going on.
