Despite what you may think, the title of this post (which is to be part one in a series) is not a reference to an affinity for puting my hands on a giant phallus. Instead, it’s to show followers of the EF internets activity a record I really like. In this case, the 12″ I’m feelin is from Stones Throw artist Mayer Hawthorne, and it’s called I Need You. This shit is extra hard to get out of your head once you listen to it, so click the play button wisely.
Hawthorne, who usually does all his own production, decided to reach out to underrated veteran hip-hop producer Nottz (who did beats for B.I.G., Ghostface, Royce da 5’9″, and the late J. Dilla… not to mention his work on the classic Rawkus Records compilation Lyricist Lounge vol. 1 .) to provide the instrumental accompaniment to Hawthorne’s signature falsetto. The pairing of Nottz’s beat–with its amazing flam-laced drum fills during the chorus–and Hawthorne’s syrupy vocals really set this jawn aflame. As a plus for the design heads, the packaging is on point–check the Freegums etching on the wax here and here–but that ain’t nothin new for Stones Throw and Mayer Hawthorne (peep the packaging on his first single, a heart-shaped 10″, here).
I hope you like this late night Imatryandgetupindemdraws neck-snap soul trip down the What Decade Did This Come Out In rabbit hole. I’ll be posting more about records I dig in the future. Until then…
