Trouble&Bass & Fabriclive.53

I’m publishing this on behalf of the homie, DJ Salinger who is still in London with low integrity internets:

“If you don’t know the club “Fabric,” you probably also don’t know anything about electronic music, what this website is or how you got here. If you are that micro-minority that hasn’t heard of London’s most influential night club, shit, you can wikipedia it. Seriously, Fabric.

Fabric has been London’s biggest and most influential night club for the better part of a decade. Literally a global mecca for dance music and DJ acts, just the name “Fabric” is synonymous with the world’s biggest and most legit music (w/10+ DJs per night), and nights that don’t end until 6am. The parties here are spread between 3 different rooms, massive rooms, with massive speakers, massive laser lights, and massive amounts of people -literally thousands. What makes Fabric special is, when you’re listening to that electro-banger that you’ve been jamming out to on your iPod, walking around knowing that probably no one within 100 miles of you knows that song- well everyone here, they know that song.

FABRICLIVE is a once a month release party that ropes some serious talent, with the headliner selected to record a mixtape for the newest installment of the Fabriclive series (Yes, its also a record label!). Ever heard of Caspa? This is the event that put him on the global map, with his fabriclive.37 mix.

This month was Drop the Lime, the captain of Brooklyn’s heavy-as-shit electo record label ‘Trouble & Bass.’ Cats from Charleston might recognize the name, as the repeat offender at Torch, DEATHFACE, is on the label. You may recognize this little tune from Drop the Lime:

Enjoy the videos I snapped + the new music vid for Drop the Lime’s newest release Sex Sax. My vid is split between clips of Drop the Lime and Nero, who murdered room 2 with some dubstep madness (imagine that scene in Matrix II where everyone is partying in a cave, that’s what room 2 was like).

Get Buck

Filed under: Beach Boddin', Show Recap — Tags: , — machete @ 4:50 pm

Last Beach Boddin’, we had our homie, Buckmaster, in the house from Charlotte. Besides being a tall drink of water as my dear old man used to say, the boy sure can DJ. Everybody got buck, and the bar was utilized for activities other than just serving drinks.

Everyone’s favorite part of the Buckmaster set had to be when he slowed things down to drop a short Moombahton set before speeding back up and dropping his own remix of “Funeral” by Band of Horses.

Here’s a little Moombahton for those not familiar with the genre (Dave Nada is credited with inventing the sound):

RUFFCUT – MOOMBAHTON DUB by T&ARecords

It definitely reminds me of reggaeton, but thankfully less repetitive with dope samples from, well, everything from dutch house to electro. No telling how much longer the craze will last, but basically, the world’s best DJs seem to be slipping a little moombahton into their sets.

Here’s what happened at Beach Boddin’ with Buckmaster (all photos courtesy of our own paparazzi, Jasper B.):

Home Grown

Filed under: News, Show Recap — Tags: — cmnder @ 10:30 am

Last Tuesday was Home Grown, a warehouse party unlike anything we’ve seen in Charleston for quite some time. By the end of the night 14 of Charleston’s best DJs had dropped amazing sets ranging from disco, to underground hip-hop, to hard electro, breaks, dubstep, and even live piano instrumentals. By 4 am when the music stopped most would agree that the event lived up to its name as a segway into a more unified local dance music scene that warmed our hearts so much NO ONE could stop sweating.

The B.Y.O.M (bring your own meat, of course) BBQ kicked off the party at 8pm along with a DJ set by newly formed duo, Chopsticks.

Following them up was a crazy trip through vinyl disco with our own Party Dad.

Then it was Spaced Invaders, bringing it back to basics with funky individual sets by Alex Rosen and DJ Sonar.

New to EF Records, underground hip-hop king DJ Bird Flu dropped a set that got the breakers breakin’, the booty shakers shakin’, and even managed to get the mean muggers to put down their pitchforks and grind on somebody.

Klipart came next integrating live keyboard instrumentals into their set, impressing everyone.

NEONGOLDEN followed, and I must say the sweat did flow.

Oh, and then there was Rocky Horror (also on EF Records now!). My God. He twisted up knobs and people’s faces in the same motion.

MACHETE arrived from Central America just in time to catch the second half of the RH set and set up for Electric Friends to play. At one point, we were dripping silver dollar sized droplets of sweat. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Next up was our homie, Jake B! One of my favorite sets by Jake B that I’ve ever heard.

And closing the night was Skitch, throwing down everything from breaks to dubstep.

At one point, he had people baby makin’ on the dance floor.

My favorite partiers of the night? This family of ravers. I really hope we see them again.

What was really amazing about the night that must be pointed out is that all these talented gents are from Charleston. The party was a rager on a Tuesday night, and it was all Home Grown. Thank you, Charleston. Oh, and if any babies were conceived that night, we request you name the boys Matthew Jeffery De Nitto. If it’s a girl, please name her Madelyn Nicole Turner. Thanks!

Backin’ up one day… last night was my last set at Torch before I move to LA on Friday. I mixed it up with JeffET and we came out with a set that was so awesome and fun for us, that we are just going to have to post it up on the blog later this week. In honor of Beach Boddin’ it was all out beach themed, complete with short shorts, tank tops, and as many inflatable beach toys as you could handle. Thanks so much to the bar for holding music and DJing up to such a high standard!

See everyone tonight!

Chasing the Dragon

Speakeasy style night at Tasty Thai was super fun again last night. Sketchy backdoor, low lights, and a real eclectic set between myself, Party Dad, and JeffET made for a good start to Saturday. Best part of the night, tho… super drunk girl tries to steal Party Dad’s car after the gig, thinking it was hers… wow! She just gets it started as P. Dad jumps on the hood and scares the shit out of her!!

In other news… Diplo, a big inspiration for all of us just put out a new mixtape for a blog called Pomp&Clout. Just when you think he can’t surprise you anymore, we get ‘Chasing The Dragon’, a crazy mix of 60’s and 70’s acid rock, slow funk and soul, and pure rock’n'roll. Check it out and get it!

Last night was another “Beach Boddin’” at Torch Monday. JeffET mixed with me dropping all vinyl all night long and things got a little out of hand, in a very good way, thanks to our killer monday night crowd and some new intelligent lights. I dropped a live version of my latest mix tape, Nice & Noisy, which was intense but well received and free to download HERE (Nice & Noisy)

JeffET and I are also changing things up at NV this Wednesday for our weekly MARMALADE party.

Just $3 cover til 12am,
$2 PBRs!, and
new dress code: be cool

Come dance with us!! To tide you over… Bart Bmore, one of the best up and comers in the electro/dutch house scene. Here’s one of his latest releases for ya.

For a good time, come in the backdoor

Filed under: MACHETE, Show Recap — Tags: , — machete @ 6:58 pm

We’re trying something new at Tasty: dim lights, cheap drinks, and you have to come in the backdoor to get in. I personally love getting nasty at Tasty.

Coooo-ku

Electric Friends were at O-Ku last night for an after party/fashion show of the ever talented Anna Lassiter hosted by Charleston After Dark. The place was packed to capacity for most of the night, and it was a pretty standard fashion show until Rainbow Brite showed up with a glowing hula hoop and decided it we should have a rave party. I think that’s encouraged the heavy electro house and miami bass set that followed, which ultimately culminated in a scuffle between an O-Ku patron and the management. There was apparently a disagreement about the acceptable use of chairs. Worry not: at the end of the night, everyone was okay, and the only things harmed were a few broken glasses and some ruffled feathers. Again: well done, Anna.

Flippin’ The Whig

We got to kick it in Columbia last weekend for our first show at downtown hotspot The Whig. There was a great turn out in the super cool, literally underground venue. Amidst framed bugs, surrounded by taxidermy animals, and with an old bank vault as the green room we dropped a set that brought us back to our Electric Friends roots. Thanks, Columbia!

Here’s what happened….

A special shout out to Amy Long and Brandon Verkaik for bringing us up there and promoting the show. Awesome job. Dino and the Whig were unbelievably excellent to work with, as well, so we hope to get back up soon.
