Wolfkid returns… with clothing!

Filed under: News — Tags: — RockyHorror @ 3:10 pm

In case you guys have been living under a rock these last few years. Wolfkid is a local graffiti artist based out of Charleston, SC. His stickers have been popping up all over the country, and even as far as the Philippines. He just recently posted up a Big Cartel Store where everyone can snag their very own t-shirts and hoodies.

(Wolfkid spotting in the Philippines.)

I’ve had the honor of being in contact with Wolfkid for quite awhile, long enough to even convince him to create my logo and the majority of my mix tape covers.

(Get Down MXTP cover by Wolfkid)

He definitely deserves credit for all he’s done. Especially after numerous accusations that I’m the mastermind behind his work, but unfortunately for you all, these accusations are false. Wolfkid’s identity still remains a mystery to the masses, however his logo is no mystery at all. It’s even been the inspiration for someone’s tattoo, which is awesome!

For everything Wolfkid … head over to his Facebook page HERE, and definitely hit the “Like” button!

You stay classy San Diego!

Stormin’ Foreman

Filed under: News, Party Dad — Tags: , — partydad @ 5:55 pm

Hey peeps, Party Dad here, breaking an Internet silence that has been kinda forced on me while I get settled into a new apartment. Did you miss me? I’ve missed you.

Anyway, I’ve been making good use of my unintentional cyber-sabbatical, working on a new mixtape and planning a couple of A/V collaborations with one of my tightest bros, hyper-prolific Charleston artist Matthew Foreman. I’m really excited to be working with Matt, so I thought I’d share some of his work here for the benefit of the uninitiated.

Matt uses hand-cut stencils and spray paint to create psychedelic portraits of his friends and heroes. A lot of people compare his work to Andy Warhol and Shepherd Fairey, and it’s not hard to tell why (he’s even had his work hung next to Warhol’s in a Pop Art show in Houston), but I think his spray-paint approach gives his work its own gritty feel. If you’ve spent much time walking around Charleston in the last couple of years, you’ll probably recognize his style. Click on the thumbnails for larger images.

Oh, Donna...

The one and only Continental!

Yours Truly (gettin' nasty with a 45!)

Foreman’s latest steez, though, is video, which is what our upcoming collabs will revolve around. He doesn’t have anything up yet on YouTube, but from what he’s shown me so far, the layered aspect of his work on canvas is definitely present in this new stuff. I can’t wait to tell you more, but we have to get more work done first. Stay tuned to the blog for more details. Until then, you should head over to his website for a closer look into Foreman’s incredibly fertile mind.

Big Pimpin’ – Catastrophe Mixtape, vol. 1

Mustard Pimp: yep. If you’re not familiar, the duo’s signed to Steve Aoki’s legendary record label Dim Mak along with MSTRKRFT and The Bloody Beetroots. These dudes pretty much define electro, with dope remixes of everything from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Theme. They’ve just released this new tape featuring some of the year’s biggest electro tracks in a heavy ass mix you can listen to with grandma while you wash her hair. Be forewarned though, grandma may be killed via audio assault. Make sure that will is up to date!

Check it out below, volume two is on deck soon.

More info (tracklist!).

If you’re keen enough, you might notice a few tracks by Deathface on the list. Big ups. He’s currently doin’ it right in LA at parties like Control, run by one of our favorite sources of electronic music news and tracks, gottadancedirty. We’re loving everything we’re hearing lately from our homie, Deathface, and we’ll bet our lunch he’ll be huge in 2011 (again). Is anyone still in doubt over who was the driving talent behind Guns’N'Bombs? Yeah, didn’t think so.

Update on the MSTRKRFT rumor.

There’s further confirmation on the rumor that MSTRKRFT may be coming to town. It must be noted that we haven’t heard anything definite just quite yet, but all signs point to MSTRKRFT (JFK + ALP) + Big Boi at the Yorktown October 28.

That’s right ladies and gentlemen. MSTRKRFT and Big Boi, one night, one place. The show apparently isn’t a joint venture, so it’s not like one’s opening for the other, but rather it’s just a lucky coincidence that these two musical giants are booked on the same night in the same place at consecutive times. While MSTRKRFT’s arrival is still pending official confirmation, Big Boi’s official tour site for still confirms a Charleston show, but we’re hearing the venue listed is not accurate.

This’ll be big for Charleston, so mark your calendars, homies. Stay tuned for after party news, this will be one of the biggest electronic music events in Charleston this year.

Deathface in LA

Fresh off an Electric Friends Beach Boddin’ Monday at Torch in Charleston, Deathface (aka Johnny Love) is all over LA this weekend. Last night was the main room at mega club Avalon, in Hollywood. Johnny killed it of course, dropping an hour long set of heavy electro going into dubstep, overlooking a crazy light system and a dancefloor packed full of raughty hipsters.

Tonight’s gonna be all about white t-shirts and old jeans. Johnny is doin a blood party in East LA, something he is known for where beer along with buckets of fake blood are provided.

Pictures tomorrow!

Here’s some Deathface for you if you’re not in LA.

Chopsticks is back from China

Filed under: News, Traveling, Trips Abroad — chopsticks @ 6:00 pm

We’ve just recently landed back in the states from our eastern adventure just in time to take part in the premiere party-DJ-music-sweatfest celebration event of the summer, Home Grown. But before we were opening up for the best DJ’s in town, we were back in the orient knocking back tasty critters like scorpions and sea urchins. We were in Beijing and we hit up the Wangfujing snack street, famous for funky food and, well, really funky food. We took part in just about all the place had to offer (except the goat penis, we’re not about that!), take a look at some of the delicacies we sampled.

Chinese people love to get their street drink on. There’re tons of street vendors with kegs selling beer in plastic bags for literally pennies. Normally we conduct ourselves much more gentlemanly-like, but we just couldn’t help partaking. The equation: Irishmen—along with all manner of other ethnicities, $1 pitchers, no closing time, and locals. The outcome: Chopsticks gets right fucking pissed (Aussie for “wasted” ya’ll), arm wrestle the locals, and pee all over people’s apartments.

Contrary to popular belief, Chinese people can actually drive well. It’s like this because the rules don’t matter, the weak get weeded out via horrible head-on collisions before they get their cars outta park. So everybody left alive that’s still driving around is certified pro at driving like a mad-man but managing to stay alive at the same time. Take a look at this traffic incident, it’s the norm.

After finally managing to make it to Hong Kong, we immediately saw that the place is amazing! Air so crispy that Snap, Crackle, and Pop all quit their jobs, tropical mountains (what? yeah, really!) popping straight out of crystal clear water, amazing weather, and an amazing amount of international culture. Sadly due to our Beijing train-missing escapades, we were only there for a day and a half and were unable to take advantage of most of what the city had to offer, but we’ll most definitely be going back.

Now we’re back in town and ready to get back to business, look for us at our regular Friday night and around town supporting other EF Records members and local DJs.

Indie folk music: more emotion-packed and dangerous than ever!

Filed under: News — Tags: — machete @ 4:03 pm

Pitchfork is reporting that a man committed suicide at a Swell Season concert. Apparently, he jumped from the roof of a winery and fell three stories, landing on the stage between crooning sets. I wonder how often this happens at their shows? While suicide is no laughing matter, if you’re playing music this depressing loudly and in public, sad things are potentially going to happen. I think that we should look at the dangers of indie folk music! While people sometimes die at electronic shows (a la Electric Daisy Carnival), it’s generally because they’re having so much fun, they forget to drink water and die. But at least they died having a super awesome time. This guy got so sad at a Swell Season show, he offed himself! Check out minute 1:00 of “Falling Slowly” below and see if you don’t want to jump off a winery roof (and fall at any speed):

I personally want to curl up into fetal position and cry when I hear this song, so I couldn’t imagine going to one of their shows. Wow. Actually, I’ve seen Iron and Wine a couple of times, and while Sam is a nice enough dude, the shows were a bit uncomfortable at times. Hopefully, folks like Tipper Gore will attack indie folk music now, taking the heat off electronic dance music for a bit. Yes, indie folk music: more emotion-packed and dangerous than you ever imagined!

So Big Boi is Coming to CHS

Well, it’s confirmed on the tour page of his website: the grittier 1/2 of the genre-defining Outkast is playing the Charleston Visitor’s Center, which I can only assume is that shed across the street from the Music Farm, on October 28, 2010. Why he would be playing in Columbia then flying to Seattle and then back to Charleston is sort of a mystery, but if MTV Cribs is any indicator of how much cash this dude has, then I guess a couple of plane tickets to Big Boi would basically amount to what bus fare is for me.

A little bird told me that electro house heavyweights MSTRKRFT are being eyed as a potential opening act. While it’s definitely a contrasting lineup, are you really going to argue with two acts like this playing in Charleston for whatever reason? Hell no. But even if MSTRKRFT doesn’t end up on the bill, Big Boi coming to Charleston is kind of a big deal.

King of Africa…’s daughter

So… CMNDer moved to LA this past weekend, and already this city has lived up to its reputation as a place for random run-ins, weird people, and unexpected connections.

I’ve just started to get my feet wet, beginning with the saturday afternoon Mad Decent summer block party downtown. I was able to get pretty close look at some acts that are definitely up there on my list; the likes of Theophilus London, Kid Sister, and Bosco Delray. Here’s a peak at some dubstep droppin’ late afternoon in the city (let me know if you have an id on this track):

Getting back to the title…I was at Turntable Lab LA yesterday (Electric Friends’ favorite place to shop), and ran into this South African girl:

I dont know how it came up, but it turns out her dad did the vocals for the Lion King theme song back in the 90’s!!! If you haven’t heard our favorite Electric Friends “bait and switch” track of spring 2010, then check out the crazy Douster remix here:
